In accordance with the International Standard for Therapeutic Use Exemption, an Athlete has the right to use substances or methods from the Prohibited List for treatment while obtaining the Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).
The TUE request must meet the following criteria:
- the use of the prohibited substance (or method) is necessary for the Athlete’s health;
- its use should not result in performance enhancement beyond a return to normal health;
- there is no reasonable therapeutic alternative to the use of the prohibited substance or method.
The request for TUE should be submitted in advance, not retroactively, except in emergency or exceptional circumstances (Article 4.3 of the International Standard for TUE).
National-level Athletes must submit requests for TUE to the National Anti-Doping Agency. International-level Athletes must submit requests for TUE to the relevant International Sports Federations.
